BGT Senior Partner Jeffrey Beaumont recently instructed the course, “Ethics for Community Managers,” to the California Association of Community Managers (CACM) on May 2^nd. Mr. Beaumont will also instruct the same course on May 31^st. The course emphasizes the importance of acting with integrity as a community manager, and explores a variety of scenarios that demonstrate the official rules of conduct.

BGT Senior Partner Jeffrey Beaumont will present, “Almost Free Legal Advice,” to the Community Associations Institute (CAI) – Channel Islands Chapter Luncheon held at the Courtyard Marriott in Oxnard on May 22^nd. He will answer a variety of questions on topics, such as conducting business in light of the Open Meeting Act, dealing with neighbor-to-neighbor disputes, and evaluating liability issues created by neighborhood watch programs (brought to light by the Trayvon Martin Case in Florida). BGT will also serve as a sponsor for the event.

BGT Partner Lisa Tashjian attended the Community Association Institute’s (CAI ) Annual Conference & Exposition in Las Vegas on May 2-5. The conference focused on the idea of an individual driving their own performance in their career and community. The conference offered four tracks and 27 sessions which illustrated practical strategies to save time and money, the latest innovations from product and service providers, and gave attendees the chance to network with peers from around the world.

Jeffrey Beaumont Discusses How the Travyon Martin Shooting Could Affect Homeowners Associations in the Daily Journal

BGT Senior Partner Jeffrey Beaumont was interviewed by the Daily Journal discussing how homeowners associations are protecting themselves from neighborhood watch groups in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting in a Florida association-governed development. In the article, “In wake of killing, lawyers vet liability,” Mr. Beaumont commented that an association board could be held liable for harm caused by a watch group if it has a history of sharing responsibilities with the group, or addresses the group’s events on its meeting agenda.

“We are telling our clients, ‘If residents want to form a neighborhood watch group, let them, but make it clear it’s separate and distinct from the homeowners association’s board of directors because of [litigation] exposure,’” Mr. Beaumont said.

BGT Partner Lisa Tashjian spoke at the Community Associations Institute (CAI) – Greater Los Angeles Chapter’s Evening Educational Program on April 19^th at the Pasadena Senior Center. The program, “No Meeting = No Business,” focused on helping attendees understand what SB 563 means including a discussion of actions taking place outside of meetings; action by email and how to do it; meetings by conference call; and how to take action by delegating.

BGT Senior Partner Jeffrey Beaumont taught the M–204 Community Governance Course to the Community Associations Institute’s (CAI) – Orange County Chapter on April 12-13 at the Orange County Chapter Office in Santa Ana. The course provided an understanding of a community association as a legal entity, and explicates the corporate, contractual, and ethical basis for a manager’s role in community governance in order to provide proven ways to avoid legal problems and to elicit better cooperation from owners.
